Cover-up Tattoo.
A new art on your skin.

Evaluation, custom design and anatomical integration for transforming an old tattoo into a new project.

What is a cover-up tattoo?

A cover-up is a new tattoo designed to integrate and mask an old tattoo. Success depends on the saturation of the existing pigment, colours, scars, size, and the freedom to create a larger and more contrasting design.

Examples of works done in the studio, focusing on composition, contrast and integration of the old tattoo.

Optical fusion of pigments

How does real camouflage work?

An effective cover-up does not mean applying a light colour over a dark one. The result depends on saturation, contrast, shape and integration of the new design.

INK
Saturation and Opacity We use shadows, textures, contrasts, and compatible shapes to integrate old lines into the new composition.
FLOW
Integration into Body Dynamics We position the points of maximum light on clean skin areas, leaving rich backgrounds and shadows to cover the old design.
Size & Planning

Decisive factors for a successful coverage

For the old design to be integrated as well as possible, the project must be adapted to essential technical criteria:

+30%
Increasing volume The new design is usually larger than the original piece to create the necessary space for transitions and covering shapes.
LASER
Optional preparation In some cases, one or more laser fading sessions can provide more freedom for the new design.

Answers to questions.

Everything you need to know before starting tattoo modification at our studio.

Can any old tattoo be covered?

In most cases, yes. Success depends on the saturation level of the old ink and the shades used. Very dark tattoos may require slight prior lightening or adopting a style with dense shades (Blackwork, Dark Realism).

Can I choose any design and any colour for a cover-up?

Not quite any. Light colours such as yellow, white or light blue applied directly over black will not block the old pigment after healing. Our artists will choose shades and compatible designs with you (such as organic textures, bio-mechanical details or saturated shades).

Will a cover-up tattoo be more painful?

The sensation is similar to a regular tattoo. However, if the skin has prominent raised scars from the old procedure, that area may show slightly increased sensitivity during the session.

Keep researching.

How we evaluate a cover-up.

Old saturation

Very dark tattoos limit the palette of the new project.

Scars and relief

Skin texture influences technique and result.

New size

The composition is often larger than the original tattoo.

Compatible style

Realism, blackwork and organic textures can help.

Optional laser

Fading can create more visual freedom.
