Surgical steel.
Clarity about the material.

What medical steel means, how to choose jewellery, and what you need to know about maintenance, finish, and nickel sensitivity.

What is surgical steel for piercing?

Surgical steel is a term used for certain stainless steel alloys used in jewellery and other technical applications. For a piercing, not only the material name matters but also the alloy composition, finish, size, shape, and individual tolerance. At 2nd Face, the standard jewellery used for piercing is medical steel.

Not only the alloy matters.

A piercing jewellery must be evaluated as a whole: material, finish, thread, shape, thickness, and length. An ill-fitting piece can create pressure even if the material is well tolerated.

For the initial procedure, the piercer chooses the jewellery based on the pierced area and the space needed for swelling in the first days.

Terminology

Medical steel.

It is the term used by the salon for the standard jewellery included in piercing procedures.

Composition

Stainless alloy.

Properties depend on the exact composition and quality of processing, not just the commercial name.

Finish

Smooth surface.

A well-finished surface is easier to clean and reduces unnecessary friction on the channel.

Sensitivity

Nickel.

Some stainless alloys may contain nickel. A known allergy must be communicated before the procedure.

Size

Proper fit.

Length, thickness, and diameter must be adapted to the anatomy and healing phase.

Maintenance

No improvisations.

The mounted jewellery should not be removed or rotated unnecessarily during the healing period.

Surgical steel, medical steel, and stainless steel.

These terms are frequently used in commerce but should not be automatically interpreted as perfect synonyms. The commercial name alone does not provide all information about the alloy, finish, or individual compatibility.

For the user, the most important aspects are the origin of the jewellery, smooth surface, correct size, and recommendation from a piercer who can assess anatomy and procedure.

Navel piercing made of surgical steel

For navel piercing, the shape and length of the jewellery are essential. A bar that is too short can compress the tissue, while one that is too long can catch more easily. The jewellery must be chosen after evaluating the umbilical fold and available space.

Stainless steel piercing

Stainless steel is valued for its corrosion resistance, shiny appearance, and relatively simple maintenance. However, tolerance varies from person to person, especially in cases of nickel sensitivity.

Stainless steel earrings

For lobes, helix, tragus, and other placements, the choice is not made solely based on appearance. The thickness of the bar, length, type of closure, and pressure on the tissue influence comfort and healing.

Cleaning and maintenance

During the healing period, the area is cleaned according to the instructions received after the procedure. The jewellery is not rotated, removed prematurely, or treated with alcohol, spirit, or hydrogen peroxide.
